What if the real twist in today’s tech mythology isn’t that we’re living inside a simulation, but that mathematics rules the whole idea out?

A recent argument from physicists, however, says the arithmetic simply refuses to cooperate: no matter how capable the computer, reality cannot be packaged into software in a perfectly complete way.

The notion that the universe might amount to a vast, cosmic video game has gradually migrated from internet forums into philosophy lectures. Nick Bostrom’s influential case presented a tidy trilemma: either advanced civilisations tend to vanish early, or they choose not to run large-scale simulations, or-statistically speaking-we should assume we are almost certainly inside one. The cultural moment helped. Machine-learning systems started beating people at games that once looked out of reach for computers. Quantum devices were touted as the beginning of a new computational era. Meanwhile, tech leaders increasingly spoke as if the bedrock of existence were “information” and “bits”. The simulation hypothesis fit the vibe: if so much of the world looks digital, perhaps the world is digital.
Backers of the idea typically relied on a straightforward hunch. Give a civilisation enough processing power, memory, and sufficiently ingenious code, and it could reproduce every atom, every interaction, and even every thought. If the replica were detailed enough, it would be indistinguishable from what we call reality-and from within it, there would be no reliable test to tell the difference.
For years, the simulation story endured less because of decisive evidence and more because it seemed difficult to disprove.
