The Skoda Superb, the Czech brand’s flagship model, became the first Skoda to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain back in 2019. Seven years on, it once again takes the lead for the manufacturer by introducing a more powerful version of its plug-in hybrid system.
Until now offered with 204 cv, the Superb will now also be available as a 272 cv plug-in hybrid producing 400 Nm of torque. This is the same set-up already fitted to a wide range of other Volkswagen Group cars, including the Volkswagen Tiguan and the CUPRA Formentor.
Despite the step up in output, the Skoda Superb’s mechanical foundations remain unchanged. It continues to use the 1.5 TSI engine, now rated at 177 cv - 27 cv more than before - paired with an 85 kW (115 cv) electric motor, powered by the same 25,7 kWh battery.
Charging capability is also carried over: the new plug-in hybrid Superb supports up to 11 kW on alternating current (AC) and up to 50 kW on direct current (DC). Using DC fast charging, it takes just 26 minutes to replenish the battery from 10% to 80%.
With the extra power comes improved performance: the 0 to 100 km/h sprint is now completed in 7,1 seconds, while top speed rises to 225 km/h.
A fully electric range figure has not been published. Even so, it is expected to continue to exceed 100 km on the combined WLTP cycle. The current version allows for up to 140 km of range, depending on the variant.
When will the Skoda Superb plug-in hybrid arrive?
This new plug-in hybrid system will be exclusive to the Superb saloon body style, and will only be available when configured in Sportline and Laurin & Klement trim levels. The 204 cv variant remains on offer in the Selection version and in the estate.
As for pricing, Skoda has not yet disclosed how much the most powerful Superb in the line-up will cost. By way of comparison, the Sportline and Laurin & Klement versions with the 204 cv plug-in hybrid system start from 54 526 euros and 55 802 euros, respectively. The new 272 cv powertrain is expected to be priced higher.
