Renault Megane E-Tech 2026 update: sportier styling and a possible electric Megane R.S.

The first fully electric Renault Megane in the model’s history was launched almost four years ago. While it initially posted very strong sales figures, the same cannot be said of the last 12 months.

Across 2025 to date (January–September), Megane sales have dropped by roughly half - from just over 25,600 units in the same period of 2024 to almost 12,500 units this year. There are now more rivals that are just as competitive (if not more so) and, even within Renault’s own line-up, the arrival of the Scenic, R5 and R4 has dented the career of the French family hatch.

For that reason, it is time to breathe new life into the Renault Megane E-Tech, with an update planned for 2026.

In fact, this is not the first time test prototypes have been spotted, but we now understand this facelift will be more substantial than usual: the French brand wants to reposition the Megane as a sportier choice in its segment, and is even considering a high-performance version in the mould of the old Renault Sport models.

What will change?

From the outside, the revisions are expected to be more noticeable than you would normally see with an update, particularly at the front and rear. New lighting signatures are anticipated both front and back, along with more aggressively styled bumpers. In profile, the car is also expected to gain more prominent side skirts and newly designed alloy wheels.

Another change that is no longer a surprise is the move to new batteries. The current model is now only offered with LG’s 60 kWh (usable) battery, but the new packs - with capacity not yet specified - are expected to be supplied by Envision AESC, Renault’s partner, and produced at the Douai plant in France.

With that in mind, there is speculation that the 2026 Renault Megane could also adopt LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery chemistry, which is cheaper and could help bring down the entry price.

At the other end of the spectrum, all signs suggest it could be offered with a larger-capacity pack, such as the Scenic’s 87 kWh battery, potentially delivering a much longer range than today’s up to 468 km (WLTP combined cycle). The Scenic quotes 625 km in its longest-range version.

Inside, a meaningful step forward is also expected in terms of digital features and connectivity. Integration with Google services will remain, but the interface is set to be redesigned for smoother day-to-day use.

Even so, the Megane 2026 updates may not stop there…

Electric Megane R.S. on the way?

First of all, Fabrice Cambolive, the French manufacturer’s chief executive, confirmed at this year’s Munich Motor Show that the Megane E-Tech will be repositioned as a kind of electric hot hatch. “That’s the direction we want to follow”, he admitted.

The bigger surprise was Cambolive also confirming that the brand is studying the feasibility of a high-performance Megane - with the first proposals expected to be shown within 12 months - echoing the final Megane R.S.

It is worth remembering that the last performance model to wear the French brand’s badge was the fourth-generation Megane R.S., which ended production in 2023 with the farewell Ultime edition, producing 300 cv.

Although Alpine has taken over the performance brief within the Renault Group, Renault has recently shown a more aggressive side with the Renault 5 Turbo 3E: a hyper-hatch with two electric motors, rear-wheel drive and more than 530 cv.

If development of a Megane E-Tech “R.S.” is ultimately confirmed, rumours point to it using the same powertrain as the Nissan Ariya Nismo, which employs two electric motors - one per axle - for a combined output of 435 cv and 600 Nm of torque.

Also under discussion is whether the model could once again use the Renault Sport name. Cambolive suggested the Renault Group may choose to restrict its performance cars to the Alpine brand, but he did not rule out Renault Sport being “reactivated in the future”.

When will it arrive?

The official unveiling is scheduled for later this year, but the on-sale date is only expected at the start of 2026.
