New Porsche 911 Turbo S (992) gains 70 hp over its predecessor (video)

The 992 generation of the evergreen 911 has just gained what is, for now, its most powerful member: the new Porsche 911 Turbo S, offered in both Coupé and Cabriolet form. Interestingly, the German brand has unveiled only the Turbo S, leaving the “standard” Turbo for a later date.

With the highest output in the range, the new 911 Turbo S makes its intentions clear, delivering 650 hp and 800 Nm of torque-a sizeable step up over the previous 991 generation, amounting to an extra 70 hp and 50 Nm.

That is enough to launch this new machine to 100 km/h in just 2.7 s (0.2 s quicker than its predecessor), and it needs only 8.9 s to reach 200 km/h-a full second faster than the previous 911 Turbo S. Top speed remains 330 km/h-do you really need more?

Porsche 911 Turbo S: Six-cylinder boxer, what else?

Porsche says that the new 911 Turbo S’s six-cylinder boxer engine is all-new, even though capacity stays at 3.8 l. Developed from the 911 Carrera unit, the boxer comes with a redesigned cooling system; two new variable-geometry turbochargers with electronically adjustable vanes for the wastegate valve; and piezo injectors.

As for the pair of variable-geometry turbochargers, they are symmetrical, spin in opposite directions, and are larger than before-the turbine grows from 50 mm to 55 mm, while the compressor wheel now measures 61 mm, which is 3 mm more than previously.

All the six-cylinder boxer’s output is sent to the road via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, known by the now-famous PDK acronym, here in a Turbo S-specific configuration.

From a chassis perspective, the new Porsche 911 Turbo S includes PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) as standard, along with a ride height reduced by 10 mm. The Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system can now send more drive to the front axle-up to 500 Nm.

For the first time, the wheels also come with different diameters depending on the axle: 20″ at the front with 255/35 tyres, and 21″ at the rear with 315/30 tyres.

Larger dimensions and a more distinctive look

It is not only more powerful and quicker-the new 911 Turbo S has also grown, as we have already seen in the move from the 991 generation to the 992. There is an extra 45 mm of width over the front axle (track increased by 42 mm), plus 20 mm over the rear axle (track increased by 10 mm), for an overall width of 1.90 m.

On the outside, it stands out thanks to its twin light modules and LED Matrix headlights as standard, featuring black inserts. The front spoiler extends pneumatically, and the redesigned rear wing can generate up to 15% more downforce. The exhaust outlets follow classic 911 Turbo practice, with a rectangular shape.

Inside, the highlights include leather upholstery, carbon-fibre trim with Light Silver (silver) detailing, and the PCM infotainment system built around a 10.9″ touchscreen. A GT sports steering wheel, 18-way adjustable sports seats, and a BOSE® Surround Sound system complete the package.
