It did not take long for the Portuguese pricing of the new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLB to be announced. Unveiled only a few days ago, the latest GLB begins its life as an electric-only model, effectively stepping into the role previously held by the EQB. A petrol mild-hybrid version is due later on, alongside additional electric variants, including an entry-level option.
Orders opened today, 11 December, with prices starting at €57,500 for the GLB 250+ and rising to €65,450 for the GLB 350 4MATIC.
When you look at the technical specification of the two versions, it is no surprise they align with the new CLA, as the new GLB shares the MMA platform and drivetrain with that model.
The GLB 250+ uses a rear-mounted electric motor producing 200 kW (272 hp) and 335 Nm of torque, paired with a battery offering 85 kWh of usable capacity. This translates into up to 631 km of range (WLTP combined).
Meanwhile, the GLB 300 4MATIC adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, as well as higher output and torque: 260 kW (354 hp) and 515 Nm. Battery capacity remains 85 kWh, delivering up to 614 km of range (WLTP combined).
In both versions, the 800 V electrical architecture enables the recovery of around 260 km of range in just 10 minutes, provided you have access to a rapid DC charger.
Mercedes-Benz GLB space for seven
Inside, the most immediate highlight is the new MBUX Superscreen - three displays measuring 10.25″, 14″ and 14″ (optional), positioned side by side - stretching across the full width of the dashboard and appearing virtually identical to the setup in the CLA.
It may look slightly daunting at first glance, but Mercedes-Benz says the system has been made more intuitive and easier to use day to day - something we were able to confirm when we tested the new CLA.
Beyond that, as with its predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz GLB offers a key advantage over many rivals in its segment: the option to carry up to seven people thanks to a third row of seats. Mercedes does note, however, that this third row is intended for occupants up to 1.71 m tall.
Another highlight of this generation is the front boot (frunk), described as one of the largest on the market at 127 litres. The conventional rear boot is also sizeable: 540 litres in the five-seat version, dropping to 480 litres in the seven-seat version. With the seats folded, these figures increase to 1725 litres and 1605 litres, respectively.
Stars, stars everywhere
Among the equipment that stands out on the new Mercedes-Benz GLB is the panoramic roof fitted as standard, which can optionally include adjustable transparency control (Sky Control) and feature 158 illuminated stars.
Continuing the illuminated star theme, you can also choose 97 backlit stars - including the brand emblem - in the SUV’s front panel (or grille). Wheel options go up to 20″, and there is also the option of adaptive suspension (standard with the 20″ wheels) plus Multibeam LED headlights. These headlights feature daytime running lights shaped, as you may have guessed, like a star.
As mentioned, orders for the new electric Mercedes-Benz GLB opened today.
