How to get there
Travelling to Athens
When travelling from South Africa to Athens, international routes typically include a stopover. Key South African airports-such as OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) or Cape Town International Airport-often offer services to Athens International Airport *(Eleftherios Venizelos). Check directly with airlines for current routes, seat availability, and any travel restrictions. Please also confirm you have the correct travel documents, including a *valid passport and any required visas**.
Airlines include Turkish Airlines, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates. If you need a Schengen Visa, it may be helpful to speak with a travel agent.
We recommend arriving in Athens at least one day before the retreat begins-Athens is well worth exploring, and arriving early also gives you more flexibility when arranging your ferry tickets.
Getting to Hydra from Athens
Hydra lies around 64 kilometres (40 miles) south-west of Athens. Travel is by ferry, and the crossing generally takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the service and sea conditions. Ferries to Hydra usually depart from Piraeus.
